It had been a few days since Jack had been discharged from the hospital and while he was still in the process of recovering . . . he had a lot more going on in his head than anything else. Recent events proved that life was short, unpredictable. And as he had said to Sue in the hospital . . . this all made him think about things that he'd been doing . . . or not been doing. In this case, it was the not been doing part and that was, being honest with himself. Following his heart. Because at the end of that path . . . was Sue.

Allie's presence had complicated things and yet, made them clear at the same time. He didn't like how he had left things with Sue when the elevator parted them, and he hadn't seen her since. But what he did know, was that he wasn't getting back together with Allie. She would always be near and dear to him, but he knew it was time to be honest with himself. And it wasn't fair to Allie if they gave their relationship another chance, when he knew he deeply cared for another woman. But to say that Jack was nervous telling Sue about that . . . was an understatement. They were such good friends, and he was terrified of losing that. Still. If he was being honest with himself, then he had to be honest with her too. 

It was evening and he figured she would be home by now if there wasn't some big case at work keeping everyone busy. Truth was, he missed it. Despite the need for recovery, Jack was already itching to get back to work. Though, he supposed that in this time of being home, it was the best time for reflection . . . hence, what prompted him to message Sue. Hey, you free? He asked. The two of them had dinner before, evening walks, and so on . . . but this time, it felt different. He didn't even know what he was going to say to her or how much he was going to reveal about his own feelings; only that he wanted to be honest. After all, life was too short to wonder about the What Ifs.

Sue wasn't home at the moment, but instead sitting at her desk ad work and finishing up the paperwork. She could have gone home with Lucy, but she wasn't ready for conversation. She had just finished the case she was working on, and the idea of closing it was helpful. Looking up, she paused while looking over Jack's desk. Levi was laying next too it, seeming to know that Jack wasn't here when he was supposed to be.

Her phone flashed a light and she felt it vibrate the desk softly. It was how she knew someone was either calling or messaging her. Blinking out of her melancholy, Sue reached for the phone. Jack. Was she she free. Had this been any other moment, Sue would have replied with a quick yes and made plans to meet him. However, after his heart attack, she had come to realize she had fallen more than 'in like' with Jack. He had left with his high school girlfriends.

Pulling her phone to her lap she took a slow deep breath before looking back at it to type a reply. 'Yes. Just leaving work late. Levi wanted to finish his case.' While it hurt to be around Jack, she also knew that it wasn't his fault that she got hurt. Jack deserved to be happy. Sue had meant it when she said that she liked Allie. So she had made sure to add a joke in the reply, so things could--maybe--feel a little normal between them.

Jack smiled at her response about Levi wanting to finish the case. While it didn't surprise him that she was still working -- there were occasions where they couldn't leave the Bureau until the current case was solved. It did make him wonder if she was up for meeting him though, knowing that she must be exhausted.

Leave it to Levi to always be such a dedicated worker, Jack joked back. He knew things had been a bit . . . odd since everything had happened. Not seeing her every day like he was used to also didn't help. I was wondering if you wanted to grab dinner. Or maybe go for a walk? He wasn't sure if she had eaten or not, and he didn't mind just meeting her for a casual stroll. Either way, that was what he was trying to make it sound like: casual.

Sue sat her phone down, but knew Jack was doing to reply. Part of her wanted him too--she wanted him to reply and for things to be normal. To go back to where they were just friends. Looking toward Levi she asked him, "At least you can behave like normal." When he phone lit up again she reached for it, already feeling the weight and butterflies in her belly. He wanted to meet for dinner. Or a walk. Something so normal. They had even done it right before everything happened. Yet now . . .

Sue smiled softly. It was an olive branch, and she wanted to take it. Jack was her friend. Just because he was with Allie, didn't mean they were any less of friends. 'That sounds nice.' She typed, and then paused to try to think of anything he could eat while recovering. Not pizza, that was greasy. Fish? 'Met at Ophila's?' she offered, thinking that might be easy on his body. Casual.

Jack felt relieved when she agreed. He knew it shouldn't be a surprise or anything but . . . as he previously thought, with how he left things, he just wasn't sure any more. While he wanted things to go back to the way they were, he also wanted . . . to tell her what she deserved to hear. Maybe more of an answer when she had asked him about him and Allie now. At the time, all he could say was I don't know. But he supposed, he knew now, at least when it came to that part of his life.

Sounds perfect. I can pick you up. Let's say half an hour? In case she needed to do anything on the way home or needed time before hand. When she agreed, Jack got himself ready as well, cleaning up a few things in his home before it was time to get her. Dressed casually, but well enough to go to a restaurant, he made his way to his car, and drove over to her place, parking in the front of her building. I'm outside. One of the . . . challenges about these kinds of things, was the involvement of the team when it came to the 2 of them. Jack thought it better that Sue could just come down rather than Jack having to explain to Lucy. At least this time around.

Sue drove her and Levi home, and got ready to out to a casual dinner with Jack. Lucy was in her room, so Sue was able to come in and change her shirt before Jack texted to tell her he was here. Sue didn't miss the fact that he didn't come to the door. Something had changed between them and she didn't know how to fix it. She wanted her friend back, but she wanted more then being friends with him. The two were hard to settle together.

But she'd find a way. Sue Thomas always found a way to make things right, and she wasn't going to fail at this either--even if it broke her heart! Walking Levi down, she paused on the side walk until she spotted Jack's car. Waving at him she walked Levi that way. When Levi saw Jack he picked up his pace and hurried over to him, so Sue let the leash go. Levi wasn't often on a leash, but at restaurants it was better to make the appearance of one. "Shouldn't you be resting?" She asked in a humored tone while smiling over at him (see, she could pretend to be normal!). It wasn't a full smile, but she was happy to see him. Even if her made her heart ache some from how things had ended before hand.

Jack smiled when he saw Sue approach, and Levi as he hurried toward him. Jack crouched down to greet Levi, giving him extra excited rubs on the head and behind the ears. "Great to see you too buddy," he told her, having missed his canine friend. Jack stood up once more, opening the back door for Levi to hop inside the car as Sue mentioned that he should be resting.

"I know I said I was going to take advantage of all the sick leave I had coming but, I got . . . " He paused for a moment, deciding to sign the rest as she recently taught it to him. Bored out of my mind. While it wasn't boredom that had brought him out today, he said it more as a way to lighten the mood. "Besides, I wanted to see you." He knew it may be treading a bit too close to saying something too soon, or not the right way, but once again, he wanted to be honest. And surely, he could say this to her as a friend. But just in case it added any awkwardness to the moment, he opened the car door for her, waiting for her to go inside the car.

Sue smiled as Jack and Levi greeted each other. Jack let Levi in the backseat, and then answered her question with a sign as a joke. She knew it had to be hard on him to be lazy when he was the busy type, but she also knew his heart needed rest. So maybe this was his compromise, resting by visiting friends. She supposed it was restful after everything they did on a normal day.

When Jack said that he wanted to see her, Sue knew her smile shifted, but she tried to keep it in place. Jack opened the door "Then I am glad you texted.". Exhaling deeply as he walked around the car, she put her smile back on as he entered. He didn't look as pale as he had that day when 'it' had happened. That was good. Allie was taking good care of him it seemed. Tired him to the couch, Allie had joked. Sue felt jealous, but wasn't going to hold that over him. It wasn't anyone's fault and she wanted her friend back. "Have you been back to the doctor for a check up?" She asked, wondering when that was happening, or if it was too soon. She wanted to know he was doing better, since she still worried about him.

Once she was in, he closed the door and went around to the driver's side, getting in, buckling up and starting to head towards the direction of the restaurant, as Sue asked whether he'd been back to the doctors. "Not yet," he began. "My follow up appointment is in a few days." A week after he was discharged. "I've just been taking the medication they prescribed." And was forced to take it easy, unfortunately. Jack was not used to this much relaxation time.

"How have you been?" He asked, knowing that her past few days would be a lot more interesting than his. "Had a big case?" Since she had said that she was working and it was late. He felt so . . . out of the know with everything. But also knew that he had needed to really clear his mind these past few days and do more self reflection rather than try to find out what cases they were working and whether he could be of any assistance.

Sue was glad to know there was a doctor visit coming up. She still could see Jack leaning on his car, and grabbing his chest. For a moment she was back there. After having walked in the rain, and looking up into his face she had wanted nothing more then to be held by him. Kiss him. Sue had almost hugged him good bye but even that had felt telling toward her feelings and in that moment it seemed that keeping her working relationship intact was more important. Then Levi had jumped on her, and she had turned to look--assuming Jack at called her name. She found him there almost falling to the ground and she . . . panicked. He had been pale, and in pain, and Sue had feared he was going to die in her arms.

It made her want things to be different. Made her want to admit how she felt. "Good. Will you let me know what they say?" She asked, not thinking about if that was crossing a line. She wanted her friend to be healthy. He then asked about her. "I'm not talking about work with you," she teased, trying to keep the mood light as best as she could. "You need rest. If your plan was to find the talkative one to talk shop with--you should have picked Miles." That she could tease him with ease about--Miles was a safe topic for them to talk about and joke about. While he was a beloved member he was also the easiest (playful) target.

Before this had happened, her and Jack hadn't needed 'easy things to talk about'. She missed that, and wondered if it would ever get back to some for of normal. She wanted to talk to him and be easy around him again. Maybe after she healed a little bit. Her heart had been broken when he choose to be with Allie. Worse, she couldn't even be angry with him. Not only was there no promises, and no one at fault--she liked Allie. She hoped that Allie made him happy.---Which also hurt and made her jealous. She didn't like feeling either.

Jack softly smiled when she asked him to tell her what the doctors said. He didn't want to worry her but at the same time . . . kind of liked that she worried about him. He knew it wasn't an unusual thing for Sue to do; she was naturally an incredibly caring and compassionate person. "Sure," he said in a tone to match the smile. She then told him that she wasn't going to talk about work with him . . . yes.

She did know him well. Jack scrunched up his face a little at the thought of taking Myles to dinner instead of Sue. "I think I would rather ask Levi about work than Myles," Jack said jokingly. "He'd probably give me more, in less words and with less sarcasm too," Jack continued to joke, with a bit of a chuckle. Myles was one of his dear friends but it was rather fun to tease the man. "Come on," he playfully pleaded. "At least tell me what it's about?" He asked, glad that they reached a red light so that he could look at her with the same plea to match his tone.
